Elephanta Island Experience – 15th March

1,990

Discover the island of Gharapuri – home to the world famous Elephanta caves – as well as peaceful, unique villages unlike anywhere else in India.

UPDATE: We are cancelling the experience scheduled for 15th March and putting all future visits to Elephanta Island on hold given the current situation with the outbreak of coronavirus in Maharashtra and the recommendation of the Health Ministry. We will attempt to resume our experiences in April given the medical advice and situation at that time.

All those who have made bookings will be refunded automatically.

Description

On this experience, led by local expert and islander Milind Mahadev Mhatre, we will visit the Elephanta caves – which are a world heritage site in themselves, and also the rest of the island, which is still covered in dense native forests.

There are few inhabited islands along India’s coasts, and this is a very unique one. It has the Elephanta caves, Buddhist stupas, a lake, giant cannons and entire villages with no traffic whatsoever!

After an hour long boat ride from Mumbai, we will visit the historic and ancient caves and understand their relevance and significance today. From the caves we will walk through dense jungle to arrive at our local expert’s village – which was just recently electrified – and understand the culture of the Agri and Koli communities that call the island their home. In the village, we will try and experience the daily life of the citizens of this unique island village, surrounded by stunning views of the Arabian Sea and greenery all around.

The peace and quiet of this surreal village will certainly surprise you, given its proximity to the megapolis of Mumbai.

We will end with a fresh, homemade lunch at our local experts place!
