Join us on this trexperience to discover Maharashtra’s rich cultural, natural and historical heritage – all in one day! We will be hiking into the dense environs of Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary, walk through a beautiful traditional village and discover the historical fort of Gorakhgad.
As with all Swadesee experiences, we will engage with the locals as we learn about their lifestyle and their culture. We will base ourselves out of a local village home, eating delicious home cooked meals, and will learn more about the village, the forest and the fort directly from our local experts.
Food served during the experience will be authentic village food freshly made and served by the villagers themselves.
Experience start point: Kalyan Railway Station
Start time: 7:15 am, Sunday 22nd September
Return to Kalyan: 6:00 pm, Sunday 22nd September
We gather outside Kalyan Railway Station at 7:15 am and then proceed by private transport to the base village of Khopiwali, where we will meet our local expert Dinesh Bhande and have breakfast at his house, after which we will start our trek to Gorakhgad.
After a constant but straightforward 2.5 hour climb through the dense green forests of the Bhimashankar wildlife sanctuary, we arrive at the fort. Based on the weather conditions we will decide if we will complete a steep climb up to the caves at the top of the fort.
On the way we will cross a stream and see innumerable waterfalls on the sheer rock faces of the Sahyadris. If the water flow is not too strong, we will take a dip in one of the pools!
Once we’re back to our local expert’s home, we will freshen up and prepare ourselves for a delicious local lunch. After tasting the quality of rice and fresh vegetables the villagers consume, you will be jealous of their lifestyle!
After lunch we will take a short and flat walk to a lake nearby. Those who wish to rest for a bit at the home or walk around the village can do so.
We will return within an hour, have a cup of chai and board our transport to get back to Kalyan by 6:00 pm.
How to get to the meeting point:
There is a local train departing from CST at 6:06 am that will get you to Kalyan by 7:07 am. You can also get on to the train at Dadar at 6:21 am, Kurla at 6:28 am or Thane at 6:46 am.
Participants may also choose to drive down to the base village by themselves. The journey is 3 hours from Mumbai. Please contact us for details and we will help you organise parking for your vehicle.
